Most techniques for synchronizing with multimedia have their roots in the Timed Text format. W3C has done a credible job of formalizing and making Timed Text standards available for multimedia captioning and video description.
The AutoCaption generated W3C Timed Text template is particularly useful as a starting point for unique or proprietary formats. The template takes care of the hard work of identifying what the caption must say, how the caption is formatted, and when it must appear. The template can be further edited in simple ASCII or UNICODE.
The W3C Timed Text template can be fleshed out with particulars like font, and color to tailor it to your Internet and multimedia applications.
