Most computers today have only one RS-232 serial port.  Most laptop computers don't have any RS-232 serial ports.

Problem: Most caption inserter/encoders require a RS-232 serial port.

The solution is an inexpensive USB to Serial Port adapter.  These gadgets are also known as USB PDA Adapters.
